I was raised in the Portland, Oregon area, where residents have to crush every object flat before they trash it, because they have such a limited amount that they can put out for collection. It’s always seemed lazy and wasteful to take advantage of the fact that the amount of trash we put out every week here in Arvada Colorado is virtually unlimited.
But I’ve gotten used to it. I may have to learn some new tricks.
The City of Arvada, and other nearby cities, are planning to create city-wide trash collection policies.
This is a good thing.
Currently, *every homeowner chooses whoever they want to pick up their trash, mostly based on cost. Each company picks up on different days. Consequently, there are trash trucks on the neighborhood streets and trash piled up along the curbs every day. Trash trucks are the heaviest vehicle on these streets, and they do a lot of damage.
A city-wide collection plan would solve that problem. But of course, there’s some news many will view as bad mingled in.
The City will limit the amount of trash each household can put out, and rumor is they won’t pick up yard waste at all. And recycling will be mandatory. A lot of old dogs are going to have to learn a lot of new tricks!
I have no idea when anything will be implemented, or what the final plan will look like. Arvada is studying it, read the article here. In the meantime, if you’ve got a lot of junk you plan to put out by the curb, I suggest you do it soon.
*Communities that have homeowner’s associations contract with a single collection agency, so they all get picked up the same day. I don’t know how the city’s plans will affect these areas.

I write posts on real estate issues and local events in the Denver metro area, especially those *communities between Denver and Boulder, as a public service. My hope is to give people an idea of the ‘flavor’ of our community, in case they’re new or moving to the Denver area.
