Arvada CO 10th Annual Kite Festival

The Kite Festival is one of my favorite Arvada events.  Arvada hosts so many fun events, it’s hard to choose – but this one is just so full of eye candy, and laid back and family-friendly. Not to mention so close to my home, I can walk there!

Arvada’s 2012 Kite Festival is set for Saturday, April 14 starting at 10 am, and the rain date is April 21.  It’s a very popular event, and cars line the neighborhood streets quite a ways in both directions on both streets that border the park.  So it’s nice to see that this year, they will be offering shuttle service from the free parking lots at Warder Elementary School, 7840 Carr Drive, and George Meyers Pool to Robby Ferrufino Park.

.

There are 8 kite-building classes in advance of the Kite Festival. Cost is $3.50.

Celebrate Your Nineties at High Tea in Arvada

High Tea for Seniors is a highly anticipated annual event in Arvada, Colorado.  The event is for Arvada residents 90 years and over, which is why I don’t have any pictures – I can’t go for nearly four more decades.

Please read the info below, from the City of Arvada’s web site, for more information.  If you know anyone who might enjoy High Tea for Seniors, please pass this along so they can have this wonderful afternoon memory too.

Tea is served!  And tasty sandwiches!  And elegant desserts!  It’s the 6th annual High Tea for Seniors on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at 4:00 PM at the Community Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Blvd. The festivities are for residents of Arvada 90 years and older and a guest.

“The High Tea has become an event eagerly anticipated by guests from previous years. We have an abundant array of tea sandwiches, fruit and scrumptious desserts served with the teas,” event co-chair Lynne Heinekamp explains. Gifts for each guest add to the fun.

This year’s engaging entertainment will be the Legendary Ladies who specialize in depicting Colorado history. Guests will step back in time as the unconventional personalities of Colorado’s unique frontier women reveal themselves in historically accurate and lively stories.

Over 70 honored attendees and their guests will eat, drink and be quite merry at this celebration of lives well lived.  Guests will recall life memories from the early twentieth century, reminiscing and sharing their stories with fellow honorees.  As event co-chair Mary Vandoozer explains, “Our guests have lived long, interesting lives.  I enjoy seeing their faces and some make a great effort just to attend the event.”

There is no charge for this event.  For more information about the High Tea for Seniors and for reservations, call 720-898-7400 or go to www.arvadafestivals.com.  This event is presented by Arvada Festivals Commission.

Colorado Tartan Day in Olde Town Arvada – 2012

Colorado Tartan Day - one of the best spring events between Denver and Boulder!

Saturday, April 14, 2012

9 am to 4 pm at McIlvoy Park

Olde Town Arvada – where parking is free!

Apparently the special events haven’t been announced yet, as I can’t find them on the site.  But last year they had whiskey tasting, piping contest, dinner/ceilidh, and more!

The hubby and I enjoyed ourselves so much at last years’ Colorado Tartan Day, I’m looking forward to this year’s event even more!

There was music …

dancing …

OK, OK – they’re not really dancing!

food …

history …

and discoveries to be made.

My maiden name was Dunlap, I never thought of that as a Scottish name.  But I learned that there is an entire county with that name. Made me feel special.

Here’s a link to the Colorado Tartan Day post I wrote last year, after discovering that Colorado has it’s own official tartan. Very pretty, this year I’ll go prepared to buy some and hope they still have it.

St Patrick’s Day Celebration in Olde Town Arvada
Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Historic Olde Two Arvada is starting a new signature event in our community to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Olde Town. We want to bring new eyes and foot traffic into our vibrant district and what a great day to do so. We hope to have another great destination for folks to have a fun, family event in the Western Suburbs of Denver.

This event will be held on Grandview Ave between Olde Wadsworth and Webster from 1pm-6pm with live bands, arts/crafts booths, food booths, kids entertainment, and beer/wine sales. The street will be closed to traffic to make this a fun and safe event for all.

We know the Olde Town St Patrick’s Day Street Fair will become a signature event for our growing Main Street Community.

Get Elevated for Hot Air Balloon Festival in Snowmass Colorado

My hubby and I went to our first hot air balloon festival, after many years of wanting to attend one. It was nice to find one so close to home (‘home’ is the town of Arvada, about midway between Denver and Boulder), so we could go on the spur of the moment. It was the 36th Annual Snowmass Balloon Festival. (Snowmass is just outside of Aspen.)

It was September 16-18, 2011, so we also got to enjoy autumn’s colorful show of changing aspen leaves.

This shot is from a night-time event, where the balloons are lit up by the flames that create the hot air to inflate the balloons. What a beautiful sight. It was chilly at 8100 feet elevation, but when one of those torches lit up close to us, we got a much-appreciated shot of warmth!

This is the next morning, it was facinating watching the whole process of unloading the massive balloons, filling them, and seeing them take off.

And of course, the blue sky dotted with the bright colors was a gorgeous sight.

I’d like to go back and get a balloom ride sometime. Also on the calendar – attending the balloon festival in Colorado Springs. The Colorado Balloon Classic is scheduled for September 1-3 in 2012, and also includes an air show.
